About the Club
The Wizard Rock EP of the Month Club was launched in January 2007 by Harry and the Potters. It is a subscription club that releases a different CD every month from a different Wizard Rock band. Proceeds from the sales of subscriptions are donated to literature-related non-profit organizations.
We started the club because we were inspired by the awesome community that has sprung up around our efforts to promote reading and rocking and we were looking for new ways to harness that powerful energy. I've corresponded with so many bands and fans, and I really feel like we are just a large, extended group of friends. There is no aspect of celebrity that separates bands from fans and that has enabled everyone to feel included and welcomed by this music and these ideas. Together, we have built a strong and supportive community that is accepting of music at all levels of talent and performance skill. And I think that together, there are even more wonderful things we can make happen.
We have all been affected by these books in one way or another: they inspire us, they amuse us, and they've introduced us to some of our greatest friends. This entire phenomena has unequivocally confirmed that books and literature can change people's lives. One thing that we've noticed is that Harry Potter fans are eager to share that joy with other people. The Wizard Rock EP club raises money for organizations that use the power of stories and literature as a tool for changing the world.
In 2007, we sold 750 subscriptions and raised $13,000 for First Book, a non-profit organization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.
The 2008 EP Club has raised a total of $16,000 for First Book and the Harry Potter Alliance, an organization that is dedicated to using the examples of Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore to spread love and fight the Dark Arts in the real world.
Remaining subscriptions from 2008 and digital-only compilations of songs from previous years will continue to raise money for these two organizations. Proceeds from the 2009 EP Club will be donated to the Harry Potter Alliance which was recently recognized by JK Rowling, who wrote the following on her website:
I am honoured and humbled that Harry's name has been given to such an extraordinary campaign, which really does exemplify the values for which Dumbledore's Army fought in the books. To Andrew and all the others who work on this most inspirational website: the world needs more people like you.
Participating bands write, record and donate songs specifically for this club. Each band receives 200 copies of their CD for free and are able to sell these separately, outside of the club subscriptions. The sale of these CDs helps many of these bands support future wizardly endeavors.
One further note: we are not starting a record label. We're simply helping to facilitate and coordinate this effort. We're not interested in running a wizard rock label. One of our favorite things about wizard rock is the completely independent spirit that permeates and fuels the entire community. Anyone can be in a band. Anyone can write and record music. And if you want to put out a CD, anyone can do that too! As a band, we continue to follow this DIY philosophy, and it's been inspiring to see others follow similar paths. Success is that much sweeter when you've achieved it on your own terms and with your own style.
With all sincerity,
Paul T DeGeorge
